One of the first things I talk through with potential newborn photography clients is how long the session will take. I am often asked why it might take between 3-4 hours for a gallery of 30-35 images, so I thought I would take some time to tell you about it here.

What to expect during your newborn photography session

Firstly, newborn babies need to feed – a lot! They only have tiny tummies and as newborn photography normally takes place when the baby is under two weeks old, they will probably feed at least twice during the session. This can take anything from 10 minutes to half an hour depending on how quickly your baby feeds. I always say not to worry about feeding baby before you leave home, as I’ll ask you to give them a feed when you first arrive while I get you settled with a cup of tea and we talk through the set ups you would like to use.

Secondly babies poo and wee – a lot! Most of the time I have babies naked during their session, but that does mean there is a good chance they will wee or poo on someone, and luckily it’s normally me! However, I do suggest that parents bring a change of clothes if they are going to have family sessions with baby naked.

Thirdly, although it seems as though your baby does nothing but sleep during the first couple of weeks (during the day at least – night time is another matter!), for the beautiful posed sleeping photos I need to make sure that they are in a lovely deep sleep so that they don’t mind being moved. This takes patience, as if I start to position them while they are still in a light sleep then they will wake, and are likely to complain. When I am happy that they are in a deep sleep, everything is done very slowly, with small smooth movements so as not to disturb them, so achieving the final pose with fingers and toes just where I want them can take some time.

The final thing to remember is that all babies are different. Some babies prefer to be on their tummies, others only like being stretched out. Some will go into a deep sleep straight away, others may take more time and patience. Your newborn session is tailored round your baby’s needs, the focus being on keeping them safe and comfortable throughout, while I capture beautiful images of your baby’s first few weeks.
