As a newborn photographer I spend a lot of time getting babies into a nice deep sleep so that I don’t disturb them when placing them into those curled up poses. But I also photograph babies when they are awake, and these can often be my favourite images – and usually parents’ favourites too.

In the first few weeks of babies lives they can’t see far into the distance, and they don’t tend to focus. But when an awake newborn makes eye contact with the camera  it makes for absolutely adorable photos. Newborns have some fantastic expressions when they are awake, with the earliest glimpses of their personalities showing through.  And occasionally it’s also possible to capture a very early smile too.

Parents often worry when they come to see me that their baby won’t sleep. I always tell them that it’s really not a problem. When they are awake and content we can still capture gorgeous images, then when they naturally become tired then we can move to the sleepy posed shots.

And as you can see here, some babies are quite happy to pose for me even when they are wide awake.
